NICK THE NIGHTFLY

Nick the Nightfly, of Scottish origins, is best known for his radio show "Monte Carlo Nights", the most famous night-time show in Italy, featuring new music and trends, which recently celebrated an important anniversary, "30" years of radio and which he still hosts, on air from Monday to Sunday from 10pm to 1am on RadioMonte Carlo.



Nick is also an accomplished singer, plays the guitar and composes songs of great artistic value, such as the one written for Andrea Bocelli, "Semplicemente", with lyrics by Maurizio Costanzo. On the radio he has hosted and interviewed many prestigious personalities such as: Sting, Pat Metheny, Peter Gabriel, Andreas Vollenweider, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Brian Eno, Gino Vanelli, David Sylvian, Herbie Hancock, Miriam Makeba, Caetano Veloso, Enya, Donald Fagen, Wayne Shorter, Pino Daniele, F. Battiato, Micheal McDonald, Ivano Fossati, Mark Knopfler, Annie Lennox and many others.

    Since 1989 Nick The Nightfly has specialized in quality music, his program has brought to Italy new age music, fusion, world music, Brazilian music, jazz, acid jazz and in recent years also the sounds of nujazz, lounge and chill out, frontier music, always keeping an eye on the protagonists of yesterday and today. Nick has been the artistic director and organizer of several festivals, such as: Milano jazz festival, Lignano Sabbiadoro, The nightfly festival, Elba Jazz festival, Windsurf music festival Mondello, Promenade du port Porto Cervo Sardinia and others. Since 2003 Nick has been the artistic director of the Blue Note Milano, a Milanese temple of jazz, which in recent years has become a point of reference for quality music and where some of the most famous musicians in the world have performed such as Chick Corea, McCoy Tyner, Incognito and great Italian artists such as Ornella Vanoni and Fabio Concato and Nina Zilli and Malika Ayane. Nick has performed in concert throughout Italy with his "The Nightfly Orchestra" and on many occasions with special guests such as his friend Sarah Jane Morris and Dominic Miller (Sting's guitarist). With the Teatro del Massimo Symphony Orchestra in Palermo, with the Teatro Politeama Symphony Orchestra and with the Bari Province Symphony Orchestra at the Teatro Pettruzelli. Another of Nick's bands is his quintet, with which he has participated in the most important festivals in Italy from Umbria Jazz to Bolzano Jazz Festival to the Blue Note Milan. The band features Amedeo Ariano on drums, Francesco Puglisi on electric bass, Jerry Popolo on tenor sax and flute and Claudio Colasazza on piano.

Nick with his 5tet has recorded the albums “Be Yourself” his latest album November 2018 which boasts the collaboration of great artists such as Incognito, Nicola Conte, Fabrizio Bosso, Paula Morelenbaum and many others then “Nice One” "Don´t Forget". While with the “Nick The Nightfly Orchestra” he published in 2004 “Live At The Blue Note” (Edel), in 2008 “The Devil” (Edel) which also saw the participation of Sarah Jane Morris and Paolo Fresu and in 2012 “Swing & Sing” (Edel) a triple CD Box.


Nick and his 5tet have played in the most important clubs and festivals in Italy: from Umbria Jazz to Bolzano Jazz Festival up to the Blue Note Milano.

Collaborations come about spontaneously, there is nothing planned: when you write, the thought comes to your mind: “ah, a solo by Fabrizio Bosso would be good here”.



That’s how you get in touch with the artists, just like I did with Fabrizio Bosso. He had never listened to the songs and from the start they were “his”, as if he had always been part of the song: he is a great musician with the ability to play many different styles.
